The connected flat panel TV landscape is just taking form in most countries (Japan, where the market is more mature, is a prime exception). In fact most insiders view the 2009 holiday season, progressing into 2010, as the key watershed period for this facet of the digital television market. In this relatively “experimental” stage several key issues remain. Despite the high level of Wi-Fi penetration in home networks, 802.11 technology (especially formats below “n”) presents potential “sticking” issues, such as latency and interference, let alone cost, that have given TV manufacturers pause when integrating Wi-Fi into their television sets. Hence most early units, out-of-the-box, will only support Ethernet.

This study discusses the current issues facing the market and the drivers that will help shape it moving forward. Forecasts include: LCD/PDP unit shipments by region (North America, Western Europe, Central Eastern Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, Middle East Africa), Home Networks by Region, and Wire/Wireless FPTV shipments by Region.
