The WiMAX ecosystem has seen significant developments in recent years. Early work on WiBro has given Samsung a time-to-market advantage. Some key players such as Alcatel-Lucent, Nokia Siemens Networks, and Cisco have dropped out of the market since the beginning of 2009. Nortel was broken up and sold off in pieces.
802.16m has not been ratified yet, although companies have been testing prototype equipment using the draft IEEE standard. 802.16m aims to extend throughput and capacity under the same range and power specifications. Although there was a slowdown in the global economy in 2009, network upgrades and expansions have been implemented, mostly during the second half. Many smaller ISP's are upgrading from 802.16d to 802.16e to keep providing their fixed services and achieve better coverage and a throughput boost. For this Vendor Matrix, ABI Research applied criteria for Innovation and Implementation to rate mobile WiMAX base station vendors' positions in the market.
