The LBS platform market has suffered a number of significant blows over the past two years. The market has also evolved, with smartphones and GPS becoming commonplace in mature markets. Application stores have emerged, offering a wide variety of location applications for free, and turn-by-turn navigation has been largely commoditized. In line with this, control of the consumer LBS ecosystem has shifted away from carriers to the likes of Google and Apple and their army of developers. The market was previously driven by mandates, and in their absence, there has been little growth outside of North America. This report outlines a number of ways the LBS platform market can continue to drive growth in new regional markets and application areas. LBS platform vendors can utilize their advantages over off-deck platforms and move up the value chain supporting a range of applications covered in this report, including child tracking, enterprise, navigation, security/lawful intercept, and location-based advertising.
