The market for femtocells has reached a critical point in its evolution. While multiple operators across the world are deploying and committing to femtocells, there is a worry that the pace of deployment is not as fast as was expected. Although large operators like AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, and Vodafone provide femtocells as a part of their portfolio, their proposition hasn’t evolved beyond voice coverage or using the femto as a customer retention tool. The extended propositions of providing enhanced data capacity indoors or providing innovative femtozone services hasn’t seen any concrete traction so far. More importantly, using the femtocell as a competitive customer acquisition tool, rather than just a retention tool, hasn't happened for the most part. So where does the market go from here? What does this mean for the ecosystem of chipset vendors, box vendors, and system integrators? This report focuses on the two current mainstay markets for femtocells - consumer and enterprise.
