As navigation device form factors proliferate, and the dynamic and competitive ecosystem imposes ever shorter development cycles, the availability of open development environments becomes a critical success factor for the location and navigation industry. This allows small companies to design navigation systems cost-effectively with only limited resources. While GPS-smartphones have been available to navigation software developers for several years, other embedded navigation form factors such as PNDs (Personal Navigation Devices) and in-dash factory-installed navigation systems have largely remained closed proprietary systems. The full text of this Insight is available to subscribers of the Location Platforms and Enablers Research Service.
