Remember this IBM ad from the year 2000? Avery Brooks is standing on the Brooklyn Bridge bemoaning the lack of flying cars. Technology proponents had long predicted flying cars would change the way we lived by 2000. “We were supposed to have flying cars. I want my flying cars,” Brooks says. That ad echoes the sentiments of some consumers talking about the potential of NFC-enabled handsets ­ especially when it comes to the promise of making payments by waving their phones at ticket barriers and cash registers. Weren’t those devices supposed to be here by now?
