IC Opportunities in the Converging Broadband CPE and CE Markets

The markets for broadband CPE and digital consumer electronics equipment are rapidly converging. As broadband CPE reaches commodity levels, products will evolve into integrated features within other types of consumer electronic equipment. Initially this will include television set-top boxes, home gateways and VoIP telephone systems, possibly followed by game systems, home theater systems, digital TVs and other future applications. After years of lagging behind the computing and communications markets the consumer electronics segment has suddenly become one of the hottest markets for ICs. In anticipation of this coming convergence between broadband CPE and digital consumer electronics equipment, ABI Research has initiated this study to capture this “ecosystem” as it exists today, and track the integrated circuit products, vendors and end-use applications as they continue to evolve over the next several years. This study provides an analysis of the key CPE and CE products that will drive IC demand, as well as a detailed view of the key IC product categories that will be the enablers of many of the emerging digital consumer products.
