The Voice over Wi-Fi Vendor Matrix evaluates wireless LAN equipment companies based on the degree of innovation and implementation of this technology. Innovation is critical in the world of fixed mobile convergence because many of the key pieces of the technology puzzle are not yet standardized. Vendors have to provide their own proprietary solutions in such areas as load balancing and roaming, while adding their own tweaks to quality-of-service standards for improved battery life. On the implementation side, vendors have to partner with handset and PBX manufacturers as well as with fixed mobile convergence software companies and security companies; this is necessary in order to offer complete solutions. The strength of a company's voice over Wi-Fi offering is directly related to that company's success or lack of success in partnering with key industry players, and subsequently integrating those partners' technologies into their own architectures.

Rankings     The resulting overall scores are then ranked and used for percentile comparisons. The RMS method, in comparison with a straight summation or average of individual innovation and implementation values, rewards companies for standout performance. For example, using this method a company with an innovation score of 9 and an implementation score of 1 would score considerably higher than a company with a score of 5 in both areas, despite the mean score being the same. ABI Research believes this is appropriate as the goal of these matrices is to highlight those companies that stand out from the others. |
