Perspectives

Long recognized as one of the more resilient sectors of the consumer electronics industry, the mobile handset market now finds itself in unfamiliar territory as shipment volumes fell in 2009 over the industry's high water mark in 2008 of 1.2 billion devices. The global market's annual volume is currently forecast to be down 8% this year, but will be revaluated once the second quarter's volume is counted and verified. Smartphones have been a growing bright spot for the industry, but rather than adding a level of volume that could have a significant effect on the industry's ability to push positive growth, their greatest contribution last year was the awareness they generated. New smartphones are now appealing to subscribers who are just shopping for their next mobile phone, but not necessarily a smartphone. In a time when there are few technologies left that can resonate with consumers on the same level that color screens and cameras did to cause an inflection point through upgrades, the interest in new iconic devices such as the Palm Pre and iPhone 3GS can be what charges consumers interest in the latest and greatest, even if a smartphone is not in their future.
