Perspectives
Location-Based Services have evolved from simple applications based on mobile network location technologies at the end of the nineties, to sophisticated GPS-enabled touch screen smartphones and thousands of LBS services available from third-party developers on a growing number of application stores. Despite advances made in A-GPS, digital maps and user interface design, the LBS industry is still looking for compelling applications generating sustainable revenue streams and boosting mass market adoption.
At the same time the LBS ecosystem remains very fragmented and complex with many companies vying for dominance. New paradigms based on open source approaches, crowd sourcing, and advertising-based business models are opening up the ecosystem to new entrants, increasing the level of competition, and driving uptake which will ultimately make Location a default enabler of the overall mobile experience. The Location Based Services Research Service aims to bring clarity and insight into this challenging and quickly evolving industry.
