South Korean DMB Markets

Devices, Content, Semiconductors, and Market Drivers for DMB Services

DMB is a South Korean broadcasting service intended to deliver multimedia content via portable devices. Commercial S-DMB and T-DMB services began in May and December of 2005, respectively. As the borderline between ‘broadcasting’ and ‘telecommunication’ blurs, DMB will form a key element in operators’ strategies for converged services.

This study identifies the best strategies for DMB broadcasters, terminal vendors, chipset makers and content providers. It considers tangential views and strategies for global operators who are considering mobile TV services. Drawing comparisons with DVB-H, MediaFlo, WCDMA (HSDPA), and WiBro, the report suggests opportunities and promising paths for bundled services using DMB. It also examines DMB’s service positioning, technical features, viable applications and content, devices trends, and semiconductor market developments. The study includes forecasts of shipments, revenues, ASP and more for subscribers, terminals and semiconductors .
