Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) in Mobile Phones

Components, Technologies, and Market Drivers

This study analyzes the penetration and growth of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology in mobile phones. Specifically, MEMS is used in the RF Filter, RF Switch, Matching Circuits, Tuning Circuits, and Resonators/Oscillators sections of the handset. In addition, MEMS is used in the design of the audio microphones, accelerometers, and motion sensors. The study details why MEMS is starting to penetrate each of these segments. In most of the cases, MEMS technology offers advantages in size, integration, flexibility, and adaptability over the incumbent solution. In terms of cost, MEMS still commands a premium, but with increased market adoption, and as vendors manufacture in greater volume, cost reductions are taking place.

The research addresses some of the traditional industry anxieties about MEMS technology, such as mechanical reliability, degradation of MEMS materials over time, manufacturing at high volumes, and supply chain robustness, and then goes on to explain how these concerns are being addressed.

ASPs, shipment volumes, and revenues are tabulated for each of the categories of RF filters, resonators/oscillators, analog microphones, digital microphones, and accelerometers.

Finally the study describes future applications for MEMS in the handset, such as for pico-projection, advanced displays, and various types of sensors.
