Global electrical generation will increase 77% from 2006 to 2030, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). While the EIA says 41% of power generation was derived from the burning of coal in 2006, that organization projects coal will be the source of 43% of global electricity in 2030. In its report International Energy Outlook 2009, the EIA observes that coal is “both the world’s most widely used source of energy for power generation and also the most carbon-intensive energy source,” since its burning releases more carbon dioxide than the combustion of natural gas or petroleum-based fuels.
