Compared to satellite TV service providers, Cable TV has some clear, built-in advantages going forward, particularly in interactive services and video on demand (VOD). In part, cable TV infrastructure is better built to handle on-demand video services and direct broadcast satellite is not. While this has long been the Achilles heel for Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) providers, the two main DBS service providers in the United States – DISH and DirecTV – have done an admirable job remaining competitive in subscriber growth. Both providers have continued to grow subscribers each year on the back of a few strategies: lower pricing (mainly DISH), more HD channels versus cable (mainly DirecTV) and pushing things such as multi-room PVR (DISH).
