Charting a New Frontier: TI Announces OMAP Series without DSP Coprocessor

Texas Instruments recently announced the new OMAP 35xx processor family which, as expected, is more powerful and faster than the previous generation of OMAP processors. However, what wasn’t expected was the departure from the DSP coprocessor, which has always been the cornerstone of TI processor families within the cellular handset market. Historically, TI evolved the OMAP family of products using DSP technology as the fundamental building block, which was then combined with an ARM processor for a complete architectural solution. Furthermore, the OMAP family was optimized and targeted very narrowly, with the focus being the cellular handset market. Now, with the introduction of the new OMAP product line, TI targets a broad range of application specific wireless markets such as mobile Internet devices, personal navigation devices, portable gaming devices, automotive, and so forth. This increased portfolio allows TI to leverage its existing customer base while penetrating high-growth wireless device markets with quality products designed specifically to meet the demands within each given market.
