A 130-year reign is coming to an end. Way back in 1879, Thomas Edison, experimenting with different types of filaments, came up with a long-lasting (1,200 hours) incandescent light bulb. Commercialization began the following year, and today the incandescent bulb is used in a myriad of applications, ranging from car headlamps to poultry incubators to household and commercial lighting.
