UPM Raflatac and Alien Technology have been ranked at the top of the latest Vendor Matrices released by ABI Research. The Vendor Matrix is an analytical tool developed by ABI Research to provide a clear understanding of vendors’ positions in specific markets. Two new Vendor Matrices have just been released: they assess RFID inlay manufacturers that offer passive 13.56 MHz (HF) and UHF inlays. UPM Raflatac scored highest in the RFID Passive HF Inlay Vendor Matrix, while Alien Technology edged out tough competition to win top honors in the RFID Passive UHF Inlay Vendor Matrix. Tagsys and Texas Instruments claimed the second and third spots in the HF matrix, while UPM Raflatac and Avery Dennison occupy the same positions in the UHF matrix rankings. Vendors are assessed by ABI Research on the important parameters of “innovation” and “implementation” across several criteria, unique to each vendor matrix. “The top-ranking vendors are truly leading global players, scoring highly in each criterion for innovation and implementation,” says research director Michael Liard. “However, scoring was especially close among the top UHF inlay providers, with Alien, Avery, and UPM Raflatac locked in a tight 3-way race. The number of market participants, coupled with relatively close proximity of their scores, demonstrates the fragmented yet highly competitive nature of the passive RFID inlay space.” For these particular Matrices, under Innovation, ABI Research examined product innovation, development, and feature sets; antenna and connection innovation and development; inlay manufacturing innovation; experience, leadership and knowledge transfer; application strategy and standards-based product innovation; and the breadth of product offerings. Under Implementation, ABI Research scrutinized the following criteria: annual volume in addressed/targeted markets with specific frequencies; share of overall annual market volume; overall market leadership and strength; vendor global sales/support capabilities and distribution channels; the breadth of vertical and application markets served; and addressable markets.
