The iPhone 5 has been out for a few weeks now but nobody can use any of the prior Apple accessories with it until now. The first batch of Lightning adapters are in the hands of a few users and us. What most thought would be a simple small port to large port adapter has turned out to be much more. So, anybody who purchased one of the third party adapters is going to be disappointed. This little adapter is not light on technology by any means. It appears that there are number of significant chips inside. The first one we have identified, see image above, is a Wolfson WM8533 DAC that will probably prove to have something to do with the high quality audio. Another looks like the authentication chip similar to what’s in the USB cable and a third chip probably used for the interface. This was an initial look and we will have more details over the next couple days.
