Intel is Not Kidding When They Say WiMAX and 3G Cellular Are Complimentary

Intel is pushing for cellular connectivity in laptops so that laptops can be more useful than ever. That does not mean that they are giving up on WiMAX. In fact, it's quite the opposite. This will help drive the adoption of WiMAX. All cellular modem vendors have a play here, but Intel and Nokia have announced a partnership in this space.
Nokia, who had dropped out of the M2M business is now in the cellular modem business for latops. Option, Novatel Wireless, Sierra Wireless, and Sony Ericsson have more competition now, and this has affected Novatel and Sierra's stock prices temporarily. While this may translate to less market share for each of the top four cellular modem vendors, this really should be looked at as a positive. It's a validation of the market, and it will increase everyone's business.
This also proves that Intel means what it says about WiMAX being complimentary with 3G cellular. It has to be. You cannot have only a collection of WISPs deploying WiMAX. Other service providers must be involved as well, and this includes mobile operators as well as traditionally fixed-line operators, cable companies, DBS companies, and more.
Mobile operators are particularly important because they have a mobile network up and running already. WiMAX can be phased in. With laptops supporting Wi-Fi, WiMAX, and a form of 3G cellular, users will be connected to the best network available at any time. The "best network" could be the one with the strongest connection, the one with the most cost-effective connection for the end user, or with a flar-rate bundled plan could be the most cost effective and efficent network from the service provider's point of view.
